Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has said he is willing to sign death warrant of any person convicted of kidnapping.

The governor, who made this known on Thursday, said stiffer penalties had been approved to discourage those who might want to be involved in the act.

Wike assented to the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Law No. 8 of 2018, the Rivers State Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) (Amendment) Law No.6 of 2018, and the Rivers State Kidnap (Prohibition) (Amendment) No. Law No.7 of 2018, in a bid to improve the security of communities.

The Rivers House of Assembly had passed the bills.

“If you are a cultist and you are caught, it is life imprisonment. If you are a cultist and you kill during cult activities, you will face the death penalty,” the governor said during the signing.

“If you are convicted of kidnapping and the Supreme Court affirms your conviction, I will sign the death warrant without looking back.”

He also said the state government would battle cultism and kidnapping to a standstill, noting that ‘enough is enough’.

Atiku Warns Buhari Over Move To Remove CJN Onnoghen

Daily Gist

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress to avoid throwing Nigeria into an avoidable crisis over their desperation to sack the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Atiku in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the principle of separation of powers remains sacrosanct in a democracy irrespective of what President Buhari is being told by his advisers or the buttons they are pressing to forcefully remove the CJN.

Atiku noted that the plot to sack Justice Onnoghen was a preemptive move against the bench in the face of imminent defeat and knowing the role that the judiciary plays in the final outcome of elections.

He said, “We have just been made aware of the plot by President Muhammadu Buhari the All Progressives Congress (APC) to sack Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen using flimsy assets declaration issues as a pretext.

“We are aware that there are plans to arraign Justice Onnoghen before the Justice Danladi Yakubu Umar led-Code of Conduct Tribunal on Monday, January 14, 2019.

“The charge against Onnoghen, we understand has already been filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory to his appearance at the Tribunal.

”But we warn that despite the clandestine meetings in the highest echelon of the APC and also involving some top officials of the federal government which include the Code of Conduct Tribunal, neither Buhari nor the APC can re-write the Nigerian Constitution just because of its impending defeat at the February 16, presidential election.

“Heavens did not fall when PDP lost to the APC in 2015. And heavens will not fall now that the APC is sure to lose to the PDP, seeing that the APC’s plan to rig in the forthcoming elections will not pull through.”

Atiku said that their plan is to enable acting Chief Justice of Nigeria to sit on his election petition because he has seen the signal that he will lose the February 16 presidential election.

Atiku is a Facebook Politician, Buhari will defeat him – Babachir Lawal

Chukwu Ebuka

Former SGF, Babachir David Lawal has said that the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar is no match for President Muhammadu Buhari in the upcoming 2019 elections.

DailyGist gathered that Lawal, in a recent interview with Sun, described Atiku as a ‘Facebook Politician’, adding that President Buhari trumps him in all aspects including height, looks and integrity.

In his words;

“Atiku is a Facebook politician. He gets all these smart boys and gives them laptop or smart phone and they write. They write anything they like. And then you go back and say ah, I am very, very popular or they organise bogus survey. Look, those who vote don’t have smart phones, they don’t have TV, and they just have in their minds that it is Buhari they want. The voter does not watch television.

He doesn’t have time even if there is electricity in his village or even if there is GSM network in his village. He doesn’t have the money to buy data bundle. So, they are just deceiving people and just deceiving themselves, thinking that PDP has something and I think PDP, their campaign structure has disintegrated.”

He stated further;

“Everywhere all over the country, if it is a matter of choice, you place Atiku side by side with Buhari, it is doubtful if anybody will pick Atiku. Is it experience? Buhari has more experience.

He was head of state, Atiku was only vice president. Is it height? Buhari is taller. Is it looking fine? Buhari looks a fine man. So, whatever it is. Is it integrity? Whatever! There is no comparison at all. That simplifies the issues for us, the fact that it is a straight-forward choice before the voter. It is a straight choice between Atiku and Buhari. So, there is no comparison at all. There is none.”

The senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye has been reportedly whisked away by masked policemen who stormed the Police Clinic in Garki, Abuja.

DailyGist learned a source close to the family affirmed the incidence, saying that the lawmaker was taken to a DSS medical centre in Abuja.

According to the source, the Senator’s relatives are troubled about his health, especially because the parliamentarian has refused to be admitted at the DSS medical facility.

It remains unclear why Dino Melaye was taken away from the police clinic.

Another source said that Melaye was taken to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, for interrogation over the alleged shooting of Sgt. Danjuma Aliu by suspected political thugs of the lawmaker in Kogi.

It was learned that the whisking away of Melaye was carried out around 2:15 pm in commando style.

The lawmaker had barricaded himself in his house in Maitama, Abuja, for eight days, vowing never to give himself up for arrest after the Police laid siege on his Abuja residence.

Melaye, who has been having a running battle with the Force, was rushed to the clinic for medical attention after he slumped last Friday.

As at the time of filing this report, the Force PPRO, Abuja, Jimoh Moshood, has not responded to the transfer of Melaye to Kogi State.
