Last year’s finalists Liverpool are still in the hunt for the European Cup after overcoming Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. They followed up a goalless first leg with an impressive 3-1 win in Germany, with Sadio Mane netting twice to make up for his first leg misses and with Virgil van Dijk scoring as well. Mane’s opener was scored with a wonderful finish midway through the first half, but question marks will be asked of Manuel Neuer, who had rushed out and who left an open goal for the Liverpool striker to aim at, admittedly from a tight angle.
Although Joel Matip turned into his own net shortly before half time to give Niko Kovac’s side hope, Liverpool came out after the break and dominated in the second half.
Bayern were the ones who needed to score, but never seemed to be in much of a rush and Liverpool then made their task even harder when Van Dijk turned in a James Milner corner in the 69th minute. That left the German side in need of two goals, but the only other net ripple of the match was provoked by Mane inside the final 10 minutes to make this an even more memorable European night for the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp won his fair share of matches against Bayern during his time in the Bundesliga, yet his Borussia Dortmund side so painfully lost the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley.
Liverpool fans were not impressed after Joel Matip put through his own net to gift Bayern Munich an equaliser at the Allianz Arena. The Reds had taken the lead through a superb individual effort from Sadio Mane. But Bayern got level after fine work from Serge Gnabry on the right led to a cross which was too much for Matip to handle.
With Robert Lewandowski lurking he stuck out a hopeful leg and diverted the ball past Alisson in the Liverpool goal. With the score 1-1 at half-time the Reds are still heading through to the last eight on the away goals rule but the Merseyside reds went on to score two more goals in the second half thanks to two headed goals from Virgil Van Dijk’s and Sadio Mane as they cap off a spectacular night in Germany.
But fans on social media were not happy with Matip efforts. One said: “Matip is such a weak link in this Liverpool defence. Calam, not comfortable on the ball and can barely tackle. Joke of a defender.” Another tweeted: “Matip should sort his feet out and clear that. Bayern have been worse than rubbish for 120 mins, don’t deserve that goal.”
A third explained: “Matip biggest donkey I’ve ever seen.”
Matip has been regularly used alongside Virgil van Dijk this season following injuries to Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren. The Reds were happy that the own goal doesn’t matter in the end as they progress to the quarter-finals for the second time in a row.
The draw for the last eight takes place at 11am on Friday morning. Liverpool still have hopes of winning both the Premier League and Europe’s elite competition.
