Teen-age word is used for a person between 13 -19 years; it is time of big change for puberty and growth. It is that time when a person moves through many significant changes at emotional, physical and psychological levels. For girls puberty happens around 10-11 years and for boys it happens around 8-13 years. Along with the various other physical changes, sebaceous glands in skin on face, back and shoulders become more active. This can lead to acne. About 80 – 85% of adolescents aged 13-19 years are affected by acne. It is marked by painful pimples, clogged pores, and deep lumps on face, chest, back and shoulders.

It not only makes one feel socially isolated and unsupported but also impacts relationships with family and friends. it can lead to low self esteem and loss of confidence. There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding acne, like people with acne are dirty, they do not wash their hands, their diet is poor and they eat oily food etc.
Our skin has small pores; they connect to the oil glands with the help of follicles. Follicles are small sac like structure which produce liquid. Through the follicle, a small hair grows. Oil glands produce sebum, which carries debris like dead cells through the follicles to the external surface of skin. When these follicles are blocked, pimples grow. Hair, skin cells, debris, sebum clump together to form a plug. When this plug gets infected with bacteria it develops into swelling.
Acne is a treatable skin disorder, increase in sex hormones called androgens impacts oil glands which become overactive and produce too much oil or sebum. Excess oil, blocks the pores or the hair follicles and causes proliferation of bacteria’s like Propionibacterium acnes, which is normal flora of skin. Acnes can be of many types like Black heads, whiteheads, cysts, nodules and pimples.

It is believed that Vitamin C and E, selenium, carotenoids and zinc contributes in healthy skin. These nutrients helps in reducing free radicals, they slow down the process of wear and tear of skin and repair skin damage.
Avoid processed foods, because processed food increases insulin levels, which increases androgen production in body and contributes to acne.
Tea Tree Oil
This oil is extracted from the leaves of plant called, Melaleuca alternifolia. It sooths the skin naturally and reduces itching. It also has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties.
Use Small cotton pad/cotton bud/tissue to apply tea tree oil on your skin, it will penetrate the skin and unblocks the oil glands. It also disinfects the pores and prevents bacterial growth. It dries out the blackheads, white heads and pimples.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is known for its antibacterial properties, it helps in drying the excess oil on skin.
You can easily apply it with the help of cotton ball. Always dilute it with water, for sensitive skin, it is always advised to add more water. Let it sit for few seconds and rinse it with water. This can be repeated 1-2 times a day.
Concentrated apple cider vinegar can cause some irritation and burning sensation, listen to your skin and apply accordingly.
Honey and Cinnamon Mask
Both honey and cinnamon are loaded with antioxidants; they reduce bacterial growth and also help in reducing inflammation.
Mix 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder in 2 tablespoon of honey, make smooth paste and apply this mask on face, let it sit for 10 – 15 minutes. Wash your face with water and pat your face dry with clean towel.
It is one of the healthiest beverages on planet; it is loaded with many nutrients and antioxidants. Green tea is rich in polyphenols; they help in reducing inflammation and inhibit bacterial growth.
Moisturizers sooths the skin, they also help in reducing inflammation of the affected area. Wash you face twice a day in morning and evening with warm or lukewarm water. It is also recommended to wash your after exercising. Never scrub your face, avoid
Acne severity have correlation with stress, because stress results in increased levels of cortisol which increases activity of sebaceous glands.
